Sunday June 6th, MGMT played at Stubbs BBQ restaurant in Austin, TX. Like most events at Stubbs, MGMT sold out before I had a chance to buy a ticket. Faced with the possibility of purchasing a ticket from a scalper or just not going(ludicrous, I know), I had an idea. Unlike most concert venues that are isolated by large, pricey parking lots or security check points, Stubbs is conveniently located in the middle of the Red River concert district. Bars, clubs and even an apartment complex are located within earshot of Stubbs.
So, I grabbed a MGMT posse and headed off to scalp a good location for the concert. We decided to stake out Club deVille. It was not the closest spot but it was one of the only places open on a Sunday. Outside on the Club deVille patio they have their own music blaring, rather loudly. (Don't the owners at Club deVille know the only reason anyone would be in 90 degree heat outside would be to listen to a concert going on at Stubbs?!) After talking with the bartender, I convinced him that my friends and I wanted to have a "serious" conversation and the music needed to be turned down. Luckily he obliged.
Now, that all the ear pollution had been eliminated the only key element left was for MGMT to rock, loudly. Club deVille is about 2 blocks north of Stubbs so MGMT was going to have to bring it. In my previous post, I compared MGMT as Radiohead with balls. My theory was that if I could hear the entire concert, and enjoy it from outside of the amphitheater, then MGMT did indeed have balls.
Well, does MGMT have balls? Sort of. For their slower, quieter songs like "Love Always Remains" or "Weekend Wars"I could hear occasional keyboard riffs and drums. When they played "Electric Feel" and "Kids", I climbed up on the fence of Club deVille and rocked out to the entire song. MGMT definitely brought some testosterone.
Now, can I blame this on MGMT or on the sound at Stubbs or even my shoddy 2 block away location? Perhaps all three. You can argue that softer songs shouldn't be heard from 2 blocks away. These thoughts all stray from the challenge though: If I could hear and enjoy the entire concert, then MGMT has balls.
All in all, I had an awesome time. I could hear all my favorite MGMT songs and did not have to fight for elbow room with sweaty, beer guzzling fans.

MGMT-Balls of Steel?
If you break down MGMT, you get radiohead with balls. On Sunday, I am going to test the size of MGMT's balls. I will be attending a MGMT concert from outside of Stubb's BBQ in Austin, TX. If they have relatively large balls, as I am expecting, then I should be able to enjoy myself just fine. If not, well then I will have to reconsider the girth of these balls. Stay tuned for my review of MGMT show at Stubb's, the next door neighbor's opinion.
